factory keyless entry keyfob question

Post by Conman »

Just wondering how much range you guys get from your keyfob? I've never used my factory ones since I got an aftermarket alarm with remote start. Just curious. Thanks.

Cheers,
Con

Must be my magnetic personality amplifying the remote ;)

My old remote was getting weak, It would only work within 5-6', so I switched remotes. I guess it probably needs a new battery.

Wow. Not much range then. I can get atleast 200feet+ range on my aftermarket and on my Trooper's two-way is like 1000+ feet and tells me. I'll have to find my factory remotes and try it out. Reason I asked cause my Mom just got an 04 Impala with remotes that look the same except it has a trunk pop button. I want to get my Mom remote start that uses the factory remote(you hit the lock button three times to start the car) but wanted to get a feel on the range you guys got to see if it's worth while for a full blown aftermarkter system instead.

Thanks,
Con

if your not using your factory remotes would you be interested in getting rid of them?

Mine works from my second floor office window. with truck parked about fifty feet from building. I don't think I've tried it from further than that. I have noticed it getting weaker lately though. Maybe time for a new battery here also.

I'm going to try to get them to work with my Mom's or the new Avalanche but if they don't work I'll let you know.

That only works for guys like you who wear the aluminum foil cap to keep the voices out ;)

I like to do sort of a swashbuckling saber draw. with my left arm outstretched behind me with elbow bent and palm to the sky. And, key fob deliberately poised between my right thumb and forefinger, aimed directly at the GMC emblem in the grill. I nod my head, squint, and let out a hearty "HAAARRRR".

Doesn't really improve the range, I just like to do it that way.

just some possible fyi...when you hold the remote up to your chin (or any other part of your body) it uses your body as an antenea (thats what i heard anyway). :)

It has something to do with the iron content in your blood, or so I have been told. Mine has twice the range if I hold it up to my chin. I also set off every metal detector I walk through.

There is now a fix for the short range we suffer: Extended Range Keyless Entry Antenna
