Wiper Control Replacement?

Post by n0m4d »

My wipers have developed a mind of their own. Mostly they just don’t want to turn off. I’m going to attempt to replace the wiper control switch/lever thing this week. I have not dug into my steering column yet, is there anything tricky about getting it apart? Has anyone replaced this part?

before you go tearing up your steering column, the control module is known to be problematic.

Thanks for the heads up on the control module. I searched around and didn’t see any posts with problems like mine so I started to think it was a simple worn out switch. Something told me it wasn’t going to be that easy. I may delegate this on to a mechanic since this week is a short one and I have a zillion things to do.

Remember when the high beam switch was on the floor?

Remember when the "starter" was a bent metal rod (aka Crank) that stuck out from under the radiator?

Seriously though, is the pulse module located in the wiper motor assembly? The one in our CC is getting a little flaky too. The one in my Blazer is trash. The only way to shut off the wipers is to pull the fuse.

I'm not sure where it is but, it can't be too difficult to replace. when mine started acting up again, the quote was $150. that's $40 diagnostic + $90 parts... leaving $20 labor = 1/2 hour?

I know the first gens have it in the wiper motor assembly. Apparently that's why they go bad. Moisture gets in there. Not sure about the newer S-10's though. Someone here must have replaced one though and knows where it is.

I may go looking for it if I get home at a reasonable hour tonight.

Or I could replace it with one of these:

I'm relatively sure that it is the circuit board on the motor itself. My 97's was and there was a recall on them.

Apparently this is a bigger problem than I thought affecting a whole bunch of GM trucks, but the fix seems easy enough. It seems the board is on the wiper motor. I’ll swing by the dealer and pick up a new board tonight.

Here are some other threads and links on the topic:

It also looks like it is possible under recall, but I’m going to confirm that at the dealer. Thanks for steering me in the right direction.

Another thing you can try is resoldering the board. I've also heard the solder joints go bad over time. I'm going to try that on mine. I have a spare board so if I mess up, it's no big loss.
