Overhead temperature display

Post by microsvc »

The overhead outside-temp display in my 2001 S10 intermittently displays very low temperature, like when its 95 outside, the display may display 35, then all of a sudden pop-up to the correct temp. Sometimes its off by 10 or 20 degrees.

Any ideas are appreciated.

on the front core support in front of the rad./condenser.
behind the grille

Just below the hood latch on that support. It looks like a little black bulb -HJ

Did a little searching found this thread.

I was out, wanna be off-roading, today. I noticed about 30 minutes or so into the trip once we got started on this old logging road that the temperature had been 56 for a while. and it was definantly getting to atleast 70. Well few hours later, its still saying 56.

I mentioned to dad that, I wonder if some dirt, mud, whatever got on the sensor, i think its behind the grill, and caused it to read lower, or something crazy, and when we get back on pavement it will blow it off and be fine.. He said no, it shouldnt, and it made sense to me.

But les then a mile after getting back on pavement and getting some speed it shot rom 56 to 94. and hovered in the low 90s. Though the real temp was in the mid to upper 80s (i cant recall just how acurate it read before this).

So. im gonna check the connection tomorrow. but, it seems weird that once we got back on the road like I "prophesied" it was fine. Any connection with offroading and that thing acting weird?

It does use reading from the VSS to calculate the temperature. Perhaps there was a communication error.

Hm, well, with me knowing nothing about that part, seems like it would make since, crawling around at about 7mph, if it uses the speed to read temp. would make sence why it wasnt working. thanks for that info.

 Alright, the temperature is definantly off now. before these "hiccup" with it today, it was fairly accurate. Since it "unfroze" it has been about 8 degrees warmer the nthe actual tempertaure. Any idea on what to do now? Or what might be the issue? :!:

well, i will definantly have to go to the dealer, i read on other sites some folks cleaned up the sensor, added dielectric grease to their (on other models) and it fixed the same issues i was, and am having. Did the same no such luck. Ill have to go to the stealership and buy a new one. luckily its a 5 minute swap.

*grumble grumble grumble*

Got the new Ambient Temp sensor today, plugged it in and ! same deal. Still reading warmer then it is.. atleast what the weather line on the phone is saying... but it it reads prety much the same as my thermometer that reads outside temperature i have set up in the house.... Maybe it will make a differance at night when the temperature doesnt fluctuate so much.

let me ask, how accurate is your temp readout on your crew cab?

Mine matches the airport, household outdoor and my IAT pretty close.
