Crossover & Amplifier wiring.

Post by kwalsh »

I just bought a set of 6.5" component speakers & some 6.5" rear door speakers.

I plan on wiring these up to an amplifier.

My question....Do I need a 4 or 6 channel amp? The crossover will take care of the tweeter & front door woofer. Does the crossover require one or two channels...one channel for the tweeter & one for the woofer....OR can I just use one channel from the amp for the crossover?

Thanks

A crossover requires one channel only.

A component set can be wired either way. Unless you have a super high end component set (focal, etc...), I would wire both the speaker and tweeter to the crossover, and then wire the crossover to the amp. Most component sets are designed to present a 4 ohm load when wired to the crossover they came with.

The crossover gives both speaker and tweeter a separate operating frequency range, so they can be powered from the same source or channel.

Get the 4 channel amp :)

thanks Walt.

that's what I thought, but I wasn't 100% clear on how many amp'd signals the crossover requires
