Steering Wheel Radio Controls

Post by botez2004 »

I just tried the steering wheel radio conversion as shown in the mod section of this site. My truck is a 2003 s-10 Crew. Everything went together as planned but the controls don't work at all. Has anyone done this conversion?? Maybe something was left out of the instructions but it seemed pretty straight forward. Any ideas??

It all went pretty smoothly for me.
Double and triple check the connections. Make sure a pin didn't get bent.
Maybe check fuses? The clock spring is Ok?
You are using the stock radio, right?

What year is your truck? Is there a special fuse just for the controls? I just installed a new factory 6 disk head unit. I was told it was compatible with the steering wheel controls. I haven't tested the clock spring yet I just wanted to be sure I wasn't missing something first. Someone actually told me that you can't install them on 2003 model but it doesn't make sense since the harness jack is already in the dash harness.

Mine was a 2001 and is the one pictured in the mod page. I don't think there is a "special fuse". Funny things can happen with one out though. I know the power ports and the OBDII connector power are fused together.

A dead end plug would not surprise me, but like you I'd say if it is there the odds would be that there is a way. Is there any chance that a plug to the back of the radio was missed?

I have the large rectangular plug on the back of the radio. There is also another jack on the radio but It isn't connected to anything. I thought that was for a remote cassette player or aux. I'm going to check the factory schematics in the service manual.

Still no luck with the controls. Does anyone know how to test the harness to tell if it's live or not? I can't find a schematic to tell where the harness actually goes. Does it go into the large plug on the back of the radio?? Or somewhere else.

Steering wheel controls C2
Pin 1 WHT Seek up/down preset feed
Pin 2 LT GRN Remote radio control signal
Pin 3 GRY Steering wheel Seek up/down preset illumination

Radio Connector C2 (except Bravada) (bottom half of big connector?)
Pin 11 Not used
Pin 12 PNK Radio on signal (envoy only)
Pin 13 LT GRN Remote radio control (envoy only)
Pin 14 DK BLU Steering wheel controls
Pin 15 DK GRN Entertainment and comfort serial data (envoy only)
Pin 16 LT BLU Speaker return Right rear w/o amp

I don't see anything pertinent in the C1 or C3 connectors.
