Transmission service

Post by HenryJ »

I'm going to service my trans this weekend ( Flush and filter )

Looks like the crossmember has to be removed ,or at least raise the trans to drop the pan, what a PITA.

I'm not sure but doesn't our trans have the deep pan?

The catalog at the parts store showed two filters, one was "exc. deep pan"

Yea, get the deep sump. The dealer gave me the short one at first, duh. And it's not necessary to remove the cross member. It's not easy to get the right angle, but have patience and it slips right out and back in.

I think mine was actually even more difficult because of the exhaust pipe mods I had to do for my lift.

:D Thanks :thumb: Guess I got the right one and REALLY glad to hear that I won't have to totally disassemble the drivetrain for a simple service job

yes it is a PITA. remember i broke something on my valve body when i serviced mine 5 weeks ago. i had to stick a screwdriver between the pan and the exhaust to pry it out. it sucked!!! good luck!

Trans service went OK.

I did have to remove the transfercase shield , and then the pan did wiggle out. That shift cable bracket was a PITA to remove and reinstall, but went OK.

It has a pretty big capacity, it took 6 quarts to refill and 18 quarts to flush.

what did you do to flush it?

I've got a "White ATF Fluid Exchanger" at work. Not something just anyone can afford ($3000-up)

Some "quick lubes" have them and most dealers do too.

It is the only way to change all the transmission fluid including the torque converter.

well i have something to admit, as far as breaking the valve body goes, well...i,....kind of banged around on it really hard for a couple hours cuz i couldnt figure out how to get it out, then when i put it back in, i was upsidedown and i actually got the pan in backwards  then i had to bust it back out of there and then put it in the right way. in other words, it took a beaten
