weird brake noises **solved**

Post by riceburnr2005 »

ok, did a search for different brake noises, couldn't find any similar. When my truck is sitting still and i push the brake theres a loud creaking noise coming from the rear driver side wheel area. its so loud its kinda embarrassing, sounds similar to a creaky wood floor. Any ideas? Just wondering what i should be looking for...also outta nowhere my brake fluid just turned black, of course i plan on bleeding my system out.

Have you cleaned and lubed the caliper slide pins?

Some other noise related fixes:
Lube the torsion bar sockets.
Check the emergency brake cables where they pass through the bracket on the left side.
Lube the leaf spring pack.

Yes, very important! I just found 2 dry pins on my Blazer recently while doing an oil change, and I lubed them only 8k miles ago! It's odd that this maintenance is not mentioned in the owners manual or service manual. :?

If your brake fluid turned black in a short amount of time, you might have a stuck caliper which would keep some pressure applied to the disc resulting in overheating of the fluid, or the caliper could be stuck open which would overheat the opposite side. How do your brake pads and rotors look (front & rear)? Look for uneven wear side to side, and excessive wear on the front or rear.

you guys were right, slide pins.. both my rear brakes were seized up. i was able to get the driver rear apart and lube it up. also replaced all pads. passenger rear i could not get apart, went out and picked up a re-manufactured caliper/bracket and threw it on there. total cost pads and caliper..$75.00

Good deal! I wonder why these guys keep posting these recommendations and others refuse to use the search function and still take their rigs to the stealerships. Even if, you are clueless and without tool one, you can spend an hr or two one the web, get the tools that you need and still come out ahead. An added advantage is that those tools will be around long after we all have turned to dust.

ok so lubing the slide pins fixed the noise..but now the brake pads are sitting on the rotor..i can smell it after a short drive, perhaps a stuck caliper piston causing this?

Most likely. You might be able to free it by removing the wheel and using a c clamp.

Odds are if you had to replace one rear caliper you'll have to replace the other as well. If you can smell it you should be able to tell which one is sticking by which one is getting hot even when not using the brakes much or at all. If the new one warranty is in order if the old one get one to replace it. The "C" clamp method is not a permanent fix if a caliper piston is sticking.

I didn't mean to imply that it was a permanent fix. Just something to use to troubleshoot the situation. I didn't go into removing the brake cylinder reservoir cap and remove the excess brake fluid that will be displaced when the "C" clamp is used either. The member is at Cherry Point with a bunch of junk at his/her disposal and he/she apparently knows enough to use the search function on a readily available laptop or desk top. He/she's a "Jarhead" and knows how to improvise and adapt.

Clean the evap vent filter and valve. Time for a new thermostat too.
