Fuel Tank Shield Part #

Post by killian96ss »

gmpartsdirect now lists a part # for the fuel tank shield. #12495667. Maybe this could be added to the mod list with the bracket #15960535. The price was $91.56 for the shield.

What years will it fit?

2001 has the steel tank, and at some point there was a switch to the plastic fuel tank for later models.

Will it fit both?

If you could get the years that it applies to I'll add it to the information.

I did a search on their web site for a 2001 S10 Crew Cab and this is how I got the part #. My Crew is an 01 and I have the plastic tank, not a steel one. I'm not sure of the years covered, but I will try the same search for 01, 02, 03, and 04 to see if the same part # comes up.

Ok , I did the search for each year Crew Cab and I got the same fuel tank shield part # 12495667. They also list shield, under body part # 12496888 for all years also. Am I supposed to have a steel gas tank on my 01, cause I don't?

What is the mfr date for your 2001?

Mine is a 2001 also and has a mfr date of 12/00. I still have the steel tank.

The bracket part number is the same that I used, and is listed on the website.

What is the quickest way to find the mfg. date? Is it in the vin # or somewhere else?

That sounds like a reasonable conclusion.
Then the shield part number that you have should work for both, I presume.

So you ordered one? If so take a picture of it, and let us know how it fits :D

Can't order one at this time. My budget, umm wife, won't permit any upgrades at this time. :( I was just surfing and dreaming of new parts. :) I wish their site had more pictures to accompany the part #'s.

Hey , that's fine :D Let's assume that it does fit all years until we hear differently.
I added the information to the shield page.

Thank you! :thumb:

Your money would probably be better spent at the salvage yard anyway. Those shields go for about $5-$15 usually :D

Thanks again for the information

7 is the stock plastic shield. 8,9 and 10 are the shield parts.

That is a steel tank pictured. You can tell by the vent tube.

Be sure to check out our web page : Shields
I has the part numbers and how to make a first gen shield fit.

This is the only shield I have yet to add. I haven't been too worried about the gas tank due to its location. Mine is steel and its nearly half covered with the factory plastic "shield".

If I do get a shield off a 2nd gen s series, I only need the bracket as well correct? No modification needed? How about bolts for hookup?

I nearly forgot about this one!

You need the brace / bar, bracket and shield. The long bolt at the back might be hard to find, but the rest should be easy as they are pretty common. The only difference between the shield on the first gen and second gen is where the back tank strap meets the shield. Second gen is relieved at that point. Other than that they are identical.
I mention the first gen shields because more of them came with shields. Second gen steel shields have been harder to find. Or at least that has been my experience.

Yes. At least the second gen had composite shields.

Alright last question, can I make the brace? Are there any photos of where the brace/bracket go just to see what I'm getting into?

The brace is easy. It is just a tube with the ends smashed at 90 degrees from each other. Each end has a 3/8" hole. One side bolts to the frame , the other to the end of the mounting bracket. It mounts at a 45 degree angle to the bracket to brace it.

If you have some light 3/4" or 1/2" tubing you could make one.
