Hi, whats up. I just picked up a 2001 Sonoma crew cab. My last truck took its final dump , so I checked out a few newer ones. I ended up with this truck.

Just to give you an idea, this is what I came from. A 1992 Dodge Power Ram 50.

Anyway, can't wait to start fixing this thing up. (sorry dial-up users)

WELCOME!!!

1st of all I love the front end on the GMC's. I have been thinking about converting the front end of my GM to the GMC for the grille and headlights but haven't done my homework yet. the more and more I look at the pic the more and more I become interested.....

Take a good look around the site, there are lots of ways to lighten your wallet with mods for your new crew. Let us know where you want to go with it and we can steer you in the right direction, from must do or at least check to the more extreme, someone here has tried it before.

Well, after my previous trucks problems (engine was about to go, but computer crapped out first), my parents don't really want me to lift it until I move out (I'm 17, one more year). I was wondering if anyone had a pic of one of these with the torsion crank/lift shackles and the stock sized tires. This one has new tires, so I don't want to replace them right away, plus I am somewhat broke. One more Q, is there a locker for the rear of these?

As far as future plans, I'm gonna get either a light bar (anyone know of a nice looking one?), or a roof basket (if I get a nice paycheck) and mount my KC's on it. I also need to find a brush guard, some black 'rock crawler' rims (anyone ever put 2wd rims on these?), and I will put my CB in. I'm also having to put $200 a month down on the loan, so the parts will not come as fast as on my last truck.

So, for people that don't want to waste there time reading that, here are my Q's/requests

1. pic of a torsion cranked/lift shackled CC
2. Anyone know of a locker for the rear of these?
3. Anyone know of a good looking roof light bar?
4. Anyone ever put rims off a 2wd onto there 4x4?

Thanks a lot, I'm really liking it here. There is a lot of info I've already gathered.

Are you looking for a full locking rear? Check your glove box codes for G80 which is the factory locker before you start then look it up here on the site to see if that's what will work for you. 2wd rims are a no go back spacing is wrong. Here is a good thread on Roof Baskets/Lights. The search function will be your friend around here lots of info to work with. Enjoy your new rig.

#1, my "lift journal" I got about 1 3/8" lift in the front from torsion bars. And I didn't use shackles. I went the high road and bought the Boise Spring works kit, Not sure if its done settling yet or not, but after a few days of driving, its at 2" of lift, havent checked it since, that was a few weeks ago, but still looks the same

http://www.s-10crewcab.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=7448

#2, im not sure, I know we have a G80 locking diff on it already, I never researched past it.

#3, Not sure of a roof light bar, but you asked about a light bar in general. Theres pretty much two choices, The westin bar (pictured on bobblesmitty's old truck)

Image

Image

I like it, but i think it hangs to low under the bumper. Then you have the ORI light bar, which i didn't like at first, but it grew on me, im gonna get one withen a year, and they are still in prodution.

Image

If you check out the classifieds, youll find a guy selling that light bar, and another guy selling shackles.

#4, not sure about that. Id guess the backspacing is different and what not.

And if you hang around here long enough, use the search feature every time, the info is there, but soemtimes a little hard to find the search isnt as good as other forums I have been on. I thought f9k9 was gonna lynch mob me a few times before Igot really good at this sites search function  :kick:

Thanks for all the links, they basically answered all my Q's. My truck doesn't have the G80 code, so I'm assuming I could go and find any s10 with an lsd and put it in mine, correct? Anyone know exactly what axle these little trucks have? If I knew that, I could probably search google to find a locker. Thanks again

Edit one more Q, has anyone tried the dual cat back exhaust from lmc truck? They also have a push bar/guards available. Now I have to decide between that and the eliminator.

I thought all of em had the g80 :?: As for the exhaust, im not sure of any one here who has from my reading, but I have only been here a few months. In the mod forum, theres a thread about exhausts.

Seems lot sof folks here are happy with removing the pre-cat, installing a straight piece of of pipe (optional, install flange for quick disconnect if you have a problem with the cat), the stock high flow cat seems to be a decent one, most leave it alone, then the "sweet spot" acording to many guys here is a 3" pipe from the cat back with a free flowing muffler. Few guys here liek the flow master delta 40, which im gonna copy their set up in a few months when I do my exhaust.

Not all came with the G80, my 2004 ZR5 did not, it was an option on that model year. I think previous to that most 3.73 rears had them and most 3.42's did not but Brule might be able to enlighten us on that score.

How much backspacing do the stock rims have. 4x4's are 6" right? I also need to find a locker, but IDK what axles these things have.

EDIT: did some searching on google and it should have a 7.625 rear axle. Now I just need to know if the rims have 6" of backspacing.

This blows, there are no black steel wheels with this massive amount of backspacing and bolt pattern. I've seen a couple s10's on here with black rims, where did you get them? Thanks

(and i found a locker, lock-right, just need to save the pennys to afford it).

Right, http://www.s-10crewcab.com/og1/modinfo/ ... elinfo.htm

Also, things you want to look into first.. if you havent read, the transfer case vacuum switch, http://www.s-10crewcab.com/og1/modinfo/ ... witch.html

And im sure you have seen you have one stock "skid plate" up front. I found 2 (front diff/engine and transfer case skid) carbon fiber ones at a junkyard 40 minutes away (called junkyards around the entire state, and that was my only hit). Couldnt find the front one. Ended up buying it new from gmpartsdirect for $130 shipped, and it was aluminum.

The carbon fiber transfercase skid hangs much lower then its aluminum brother. I lucked into a aluminum transfer case skid here a few weeks ago, and snatched it. I know theres a few ads on zr2usa.com, but they are like gold any more. If I ever come across a cheap engine skid ill replace my carbon fiber on with it, but till then im good.

My mods were the vacuum switch, transmission cooler, skid plates, torsion bar/boise spring kit, quad headlights. Soon to do a body lift.

Anyways more info for you there.

There are a few wheels out there for our rigs and you can go with slightly less backspacing, 1 inch or so, more if you are doing the whole lift thing and cutting the fenders. There is a thread around here on the Lock-Right, general consensus is it's not good for a daily driver but good for a trail rig. If you are going to spend most of your time on the road the G80 would be a better choice.
