Trans temp

I want to put a trans temp gauge in my crew, I tow a big trailer once in a while. Thinking line from trans to cooler, reading the hottest. Would the return line be better? Pan is out, test port is too hard to access, no lift. I’ve been searching this. Haven’t found a straight answer.
Please help. Aux cooler installed, I want to know temp. After years of racing has me watching gauges a lot

Test port is easy. Or try the ELM27 / Torque and a smart phone?

I've heard the test port does not give accurate temp readings of the trans due to location. Best bet is what was stated. Elm27 with a smart phone/cheap, small tablet. Or spend more and do a scangauge, but you won't get all the nicer effects of the phone/tablet. I was in your exact same boat. Started with a scangauge. Then updated to an aftermarket android radio with an elm27. It's handy to have all in the radio. I find myself only using it when towing mostly.

I use an Ultragauge. It plugs into the OBD port. It monitors everything is seems like. I mainly use it for average mpg's and distance to empty, but its nice to have the trans temp reading if I need it.
