I cleared the code and was going to get around to taking care of the problem, but... it hasn't come back recently. The only change I made was I stopped driving down a dirt road everyday. Strange? I think so.

Not really. Perhaps vibration aggravated situation or dust getting under the little rubber disc valve in the evap filter/vent valve. Just speculation on possibilities.

Ok, 2 threads from the dead in one week!

2005 2 door blazer
110 000kms

p0449 code

Here is what I have done so far. I reset the code and it came back after 2 starts, twice. Tonight I checked voltage at the connector for the solinoid. 0 volts with no key and 12 volts with the key turned to the first detent and 14.4 with the truck running. I then used a nine volt battery to force the solinoid and I couldn't hear or feel anything. I also tried turning the key on then connect the connector and I still couldnt feel a thing. On line I have read that some scan tools can force the solinoid, I don't have this luxury. So it would seem as though the solinoid has failed.

After that lengthy story, I guess what I am asking is; Have I missed anything?

Next trick is to remove it and clean the valve. Then apply vacuum and use a 9 volt battery to test it.

I suspect you are right and it has indeed failed. Replace it with the newer model.
That one has a larger filter and should be better.

3 more questions;

How do I apply vacuum to test it?

Is the round canister the newer version?

What is the aprox. price of the unit?

$15-$25 at your local dealer. Rockauto has it for $15.41

I'm having the 446 code also, how do I get the hose off the solenoid? That white plastic clip is giving me trouble!

Ok, update time;

Good news;

No more engine light! :rock:

Bad news;

In Canada the part is closer to the $50 mark. :x

Helpful hints;

After you check voltage and the connector is disconnected check the resistance of the solinoid. The new one measured 20 ohms, the old one measured 1.5 megohms. This is a quick easy check and will let you know whether it is worth cleaning or not. In my case not!

Sorry, I didn't have a white plastic clip. It was black and I just had to squeeze the sides of the clip in then pull it off. Hope it helps.
