Fuel Pump - Sending Unit

Post by Sonoma GT »

I replaced the fuel pump in my 2001 Crew Cab a few months ago. All was fine until a couple of days ago. The tank was about half full and I noticed that the fuel gauge pegged all the way up above the full mark and has not moved since. I’m trying to find out what is causing this and my question is about the fuel pump wiring. There are 2 separate plugs on the pump. If I unplug one of them the pump has no power and the gauge drops to empty. That part makes sense but what is the second plug for? If I unplug that one while the other one is plugged in nothing changes. The pump works and the gauge is still pegged above full. I don’t have a wiring diagram for this and wondered if anyone knows.

The other is the fuel tank pressure sensor.

That is something that I should have been able to think of myself after the other problems that I had. Thanks. Any other things that you can think of to help figure this one out?

You are on the right track. Check connections, grounds and voltages.
I suspect the troublesome sending unit may be the answer.
What pump did you install? The Carter pumps really have a terrible sending unit when compared to OEM pumps.

No first hand experience with those. Might be a problem? Might not?
