Hello- New owner 2004 CC

Postby bugnout » Mon Jun 03, 2013 6:37 am

Hi, I'm the new owner of a 2004 Crew Cab with 41,000 miles. I've owned the truck for about a week now, and love it. I drove it 700 miles over the weekend as a shake down trip with no issues. Happy with the 20+ mpg at 70mph I got, but I'm getting 14 or so in town. That’s not great but I guess what I can expect with the 4.3 and 4wd.

This truck replaces a 2wd 99 Ford Ranger that I put 200,000 miles on and was just getting too tired. My nephew was very happy to take ownership.

Its very clean, but I do need to repair some rust on the underside of the cab and bed this summer. This was an Indiana truck and saw a bit of salt over the last 9 years. I'm thinking of doing the torsion bar lift with 1.5 inch shackles for some additional clearance and will be looking for a steel front diff and Bravada axle tube, as well as cable actuator for the front diff. 4wd works great, but am very aware of the weaknesses of vacuum operated systems. I'll start collecting parts, but for now, I'm just going drive it.

Welcome!
It has been kinda slow around here lately, but there is still a ton of good information. Glad to hear you are liking the truck. I sure did like mine and have fond memories.
Leave it alone as much as you can, but do what makes it work for you. Do not fear the front. It can work just fine. Some care and repair as needed and it will serve you well.

Congrats. When I was searching for mine, I found one with only 38k on the clock, but has more rust than Id ever seen on a CC. Turns out it was only used in the winter in upstate NY, so it killed the truck.

I got lucky with mine, 12 year old DD year round with Wisconsin winters, only bubbled paint on rockers.
I couldn't turn it down because every other CC for sale on craigslist has rust dripping from the gas tank lid :)
It might have a few scratches, but it is solid.

It is still winter here, we live near the lake and it is still 49 degrees :(
How's the weather down in Indiana? Probably much warmer.
I am so glad my heater works so nice, I like hot feet!

Two Rivers, I've been up there before. My Son and I spent the night on the USS Cobia when my son was in Scouting. that area has an interesting history. The gas tank lid must be a common area for surface rust. Lids ok, but the hinge area on the inside has surface rust.
