Brake controller?

Post by mfulaytar »

I will be renting a camper trailer to haul from warner robins, georgia to panama city beach in florida for spring break. according to google maps its a 5:30 ride and about 275 miles. Ive pulled my 3,500 lb ski boat about the same distance with no problems except for horrible fuel economy. the trailer im renting shouldnt weigh too much more and has electronic breaking i believe. has anyone installed the 7 way connector and a brake controller on their s10? Also, any recommended maintenance before the trip? i just had my oil and transmission fluid replaced and i have a transmission cooler installed.

Thanks guys

Here is where I mounted my 7 pin plug in the rear bumper. Had to shave the body of the plug down slightly and then used clear household window caulk to seal it in place. Stuff is water resistant and does not freeze, and thoroughly tested in the -20s the last few Michigan winters.

As far as maintenance goes it sounds like you have done a few good precautions already with the addition of the trans cooler as well as having the fluid flushed. The other thing I would suggest is check the condition of the coolant and get it flushed if needed.

If you really want to get geared up for towing there are more things to make the truck perform better. Obviously all of these or none of these aren't necessary to tow, it is at your discretion of what you think you need or what to add to make your towing experience more at ease, take work load off the truck, or make it more efficient while towing.

Yes I used a dremel on the 7pin body to take a couple larger passes, then i just used sandpaper to trim down the rest because there isn't a lot of material in a couple spots and you could go through it. After I got it trimmed down it slid into the existing hole where the license plate light normally sits.

I did with my install. The unit I used from Hopkins has a 4 flat end so you can just plug right into it.

That is a ground block. The crew cabs did not get a factory connector for trailer wiring. You can add a tee inline with the harness, or tap the wiring.

I would suggest the t harness for sure. Plugs in on the left frame rail near the rear shackle.
